HOW TO SWIM
Getting in and getting out:
Shift your body weight over the canoe, always right in the middle of it. If you do not follow this rule, the canoe will tip over. Grasp the back of the cockpit firmly and place your foot closest to the center of the canoe. Lift yourself up and keep your weight mainly on your arms. Calmly sit back in your seat. Getting out of the canoe should be done in the same way, but in reverse order.
Swimming:
Sit up straight and relax your shoulders so you feel comfortable and breathe lightly. Don’t lie down like a recliner, try to keep your back straight.
Rest your feet on the footrest.
Grab the paddle properly. Proper hand spacing to evenly distribute forces to the muscles is the key to success.
Here we go. Turn the trunk, put the paddle feather in the water, at foot level, close to the canoe. Paddling hand lower as straight as possible. The wrist of the other hand should be near the cheek, the hand bent. Make alternating movements, try to make them smooth.

Just the way you like it!

Some practical tips on how to steer a kayak on a canoe trip.
- Control your paddle so you don’t hit anyone in the head.
- The helmsman is the person sitting at the front of the two-person canoe.
- One technique is the “broad stroke forward paddle.” Insert the paddle blade as far as you can reach and point the working blade outward from the canoe. Maintain a slight angle of the paddle to the water. Make a large arc from the bow to the stern of the canoe.
- Perform the pull mainly by twisting the torso, the arms should remain stationary as much as possible. First become to move the bow away from the paddle feather, and at the end draw the paddle feather to the stern of the canoe. THE CANOE BENDS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO THE ONE TO WHICH WE MAKE THE PULL.
- A quick inversion of the kayak can be done with a “wide backstroke,” which is a good addition in some parts of the rafting trip. It is necessary to make a wide pulling motion from the stern to the bow of the canoe.
- Often only a slight correction of the trajectory of the swim is needed, in which case it is necessary to make an intermediate control between normal motion and broad stroke.
Note: When swimming under an obstacle such as a fallen tree or low tree branches, bend forward toward your knees or backward on your back (never sideways) and remember to fold your paddles along the canoe. Sometimes it will be more comfortable to lie on your back and use your hands to slide under the obstacle.
Rules to know:
- Kayaks are stable, but sometimes you can score a capsize, so always wear a safety vest.
- Do not get into a kayak under the influence of alcohol
- Do not lean sideways while swimming under an obstacle.
- There should be one canoe in front of the obstacle. The others should wait their turn a few meters away. Those overcoming the obstacle should have room to maneuver including retreating for proper alignment.
- The first person in the formation should report protruding stones, tree branches and other obstacles that he notices.
Maintain eye contact with other rafting participants. - We approach the obstacle slowly. Quickly overcoming obstacles is worth discerning in advance.
- When the current pushes the canoe against an obstacle and we stand sideways, we do not tilt the canoe toward the current. Then we will certainly not avoid tipping.
- Control your paddle so you don’t hit anyone.
- Have comfortable clothing.
- It is best to enter the water with footwear. Here the following will work well: sandals with a fairly thick sole, Swimming shoes are also ok, but they take longer to get wet.
